Sesame Street -> Klingon -> English
i sort of wish I'd have come up with this, but i stole it from here. that's the kind of guy i am.
===================================
Sunny day
Sweepin' the clouds away
On my way
to where the air is sweet.
Can you tell me how to get,
how to get to Sesame Street?
pem Hov jaj.
Haw'choHnIS 'eng 'ej Haj.
ghoch vIghaj;
'ej pa' muDmo' jIbel.
chay' Sesame He vIghoS?
SIbI' jIHvaD 'e' yIDel.
A day of the daytime star.
The clouds are compelled to commence fleeing, and are filled with dread.
I have a destination;
and there, because of the atmosphere, I am pleased.
Describe to me immediately
how to go to Sesame Street.
===================================
Come and play!
Everythings A-O-kay.
Friendly neigh-
bors there, that's were we meet.
Can you tell me how to get,
how to get to Sesame Street?
Quj yIlaj!
HochvaD majatlhnIS: "maj!"
jupHey Da j-
Ilpu', 'ej pa' ma'el.
chay' Sesame He vIghoS?
SIbI' jIHvaD 'e' yIDel.
Accept the game!
To all things we are compelled to say "Well done!"
The neighbours seem to behave in a friendly fashion,
and there is where we enter!
Describe to me immediately
how to go to Sesame Street.
===================================
It's a magic carpet ride,
ev'ry door will open wide
to happy people like you.
Happy people like,
what a beautiful
Sunny day...

'ej Supawpu'DI', tugh poS,
'ej Qap lojmItmey SuQuchmo'.
Qapchu' Quchlu'mo'.

pem Hov jaj...
You go there in legendary Birds of Prey.
And when you have arrived, the doors are soon
open and functional, because you are happy.
Fully functional, because of there being happiness about.
Today it is a truly beautiful
day of the daytime star...

Dan, that's hilarious.
Do you speak klingon? :)
6:30 AM
unfortunately i do not speak Klingon. sometimes i wish i did, tho.
awhile back there was that Onion article claiming that there are now more speakers of Klingon than there are of Navajo. That was pretty funny til i read an article in some linguistics journal stating that that is probably true...
still, my hat is off to whoever invented and filled out the vocabulary of the Klingon language...not since Tolkien has anyone envisioned imaginary cultures, and then designed a language which seems to capture the spirit of that culture so well, that i know of.
I'm probably thinking too hard about this.

I think the magic carpet ride thing is actually much older, and was removed. I had an old Sesame Street record, and I think I recall it being on there.
Could be wrong.

It is pretty cool that we can and do create these things; I wonder still what would happen if the same force and intensity were applied to a language which was not artificially created. I don't say this to be mean, rude, snarky or assholish... I think that all mental work has an application even if it is sometimes indirect. I know the irony is never lost on you with regard to Klingon, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading the back translation into English from the Klingon translation. Pretty fucking cool...
It is, as you point out, an excellent example of how language is inseperable from culture and vice versa.

kick ass new template!
11:29 PM
You should make the table color match the background, yo!
8:21 AM
thanks!
yeah, the template is a work in progress...i had a coupla minutes to kill before class last night, so started tweaking the "897" template or whatever this was. I'll finish it up today or the next.
i'm thinkin a nice tasteful color scheme of black, white, and red.
9:33 AM
SWEET! it looks really nice, dan.
10:09 AM
thanks! a few tweaks and it should be where i want it. looks like i got a coupla black fonts in there....
